Caring for the animals and ensuring they arrive healthy is our top priority. Therefore, we only ship live animals via UPS Next Day Air on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday.* This minimizes the possibility the animals will be sitting in a shipping carrier distribution center over a weekend. Shipping centers can have varying temperatures that can put an animal's health at risk so we want to minimize their time there. We will ship the following week if you place an order on a weekend.

We also monitor for extreme temperatures across the country before we ship animals. If you live in a part of the country experiencing extreme heat or cold temperatures, we will work with you to ensure we avoid shipping on days that have a high chance of putting your new animal's health at risk.

As we get your animals ready for their journey to you, we will send you emails so you can track them along the way. Please have a plan to be home upon their arrival and to acclimate them as soon as they arrive so they are ready to thrive in their new environment.

This item ships directly from World Wide Corals. Livestock orders over $179.99 ship FREE!

Overview

The WWC Blue Polyp Montipora is a captivating SPS coral, featuring a lighter green-ish base with vibrant blue polyps that create a stunning contrast. This Montipora’s encrusting growth pattern adds unique texture and color to rockwork, forming a beautiful layer. Known for its moderate care needs, this coral is an excellent choice for reef keepers looking to venture into SPS corals, as Montipora species are often considered some of the more forgiving SPS options for beginners.

Water Parameters

This coral thrives in stable water conditions with regular water changes. Corals with a hard skeleton, like this one, will consume calcium and alkalinity as they grow, often requiring additional supplementation. Routine water testing helps ensure these needs are consistently met.

  • Specific Gravity (Salinity): 1.024-1.026
  • Temperature: 75-78 Degrees F
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8-9dKH
  • Calcium: 380-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1300-1450ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): 10-30ppm
  • Phosphate: 0.01-0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): Undetectable
  • Ammonia (NH3): Undetectable

Lighting Requirements

Blue Polyp Montipora does best in medium light, around 150-250 PAR. Although adaptable to other light conditions, gradual acclimation to these light levels is recommended to avoid stress. For those with mixed reef tanks, a PAR meter is invaluable for fine-tuning light levels across different corals, helping ensure each coral gets the right intensity for its needs. This careful setup supports the coral’s vibrant color and long-term health.

Ideal Tank Placement

Place Montipora on rockwork, where it can encrust and spread naturally.

Water Flow Requirements

Strong water flow is ideal. The short polyps can withstand high flow that is typical of SPS reef tanks. This helps with nutrient flow and keeps debris from collecting on the surface.

Aggressiveness and Compatibility

Like all encrusting corals, it's important to give Blue Polyp Montipora room to grow. While they don't have sweeper tentacles that extend to sting neighboring corals, they will inevitably fight any corals they come into direct contact with.

Feeding and Nutrition

Primarily photosynthetic, this Montipora can thrive on light alone, though occasional feedings with coral foods such as Reef Chili and Amino Acids like CoralAmino can enhance its growth and coloration.

Growth Rate and Pattern

This Montipora has a moderate growth rate, spreading over surfaces to form a textured mat. Its encrusting growth pattern makes it easy to incorporate into a range of aquascapes, adding depth and color. It's normal for the edges of the coral to be slightly lighter in color as the coral grows.

Acclimation Process

Acclimation is essential for corals to adjust to their new environment. For a full step-by-step process, refer to our Coral Acclimation Guide.
