Algae inevitably finds its way into our aquariums and should even be considered a normal part of the ecosystem, and despite our best efforts, it's all too common to end up with a hitchhiking pest such as aiptasia or flatworms. In both cases, carefully selecting fish and inverts that can help with the job of keeping them under control can make these pests much more manageable and keep our tanks healthier. It's nearly impossible to hunt down every aiptasia on your own, but a filefish or cleaner shrimp can get in places we can't and prevent them from becoming a plague in our tanks. Tangs, blennies, and rabbitfish have voracious appetites and can prevent moderate algae growth from taking over our rocks and corals.

This clean up crew is ideally suited to a medium to large aquarium of 4-5 feet or larger, and will provide a solid basis for naturally controlling common pests like algae and aiptasia, while specialized inverts like the cucumbers and starfish will turn the sandbed over and help with the breakdown of leftover food and detritus.This assortment of fish and inverts should only be added to a fully cycled system with stable parameters and sufficient food sources to sustain them. We recommend having a variety of prepared foods on hand such as frozen foods, pellets, and dried seaweed. This will ensure that they get consistent and varied nutrition when natural sources of food in the tank may be more limited.  

The addition of Brightwell's Microbacter Start XLM helps to ensure that stable biological filtration is maintained after the addition of this clean up crew. The bacteria contained in Microbacter Start XLM rapidly bolster the population of nitrifying bacteria and prevent ammonia and nitrite spikes, ensuring that your new additions don't experience undue stress.

Acclimation-Slow Is Good

Please note that while the above conditions are recommended as a baseline for long-term maintenance, our BRS Livestock vendor maintains their fish (not inverts) in hyposaline conditions at a specific gravity of 1.018. This is done to inhibit the proliferation and transmission of certain parasites and pathogens.

It is important to provide a slow acclimation period for the fish to adjust to the difference in salinity and avoid stress and shock. Under ideal conditions, the fish would be placed in a fresh quarantine tank matching the hyposaline conditions, and the salinity would be raised over the course of a few days. At minimum, we would recommend the use of an ammonia neutralizing water conditioner such as Chloram-X in the bag water and a slow drip-acclimation period over the course of several hours.

Shipping coral has become very reliable but once in a while an issue can arise and to help minimize negative outcomes, we highly suggest being present at the delivery address to accept delivery in person or to use a holding center where it can be kept in a climate-controlled environment and not exposed to rain or excessive temperature changes. Every vendor has different acclimation instructions and we highly suggest following their instructions for the best results.

If you ever have an issue with a coral shipment just send us a clear picture of the deceased specimen within 72 hours of the delivery date & time posted by the shipping provider. Do not dispose of any items until instructed to do so as further pictures may be required. Failing to follow the requirements below will void the 3-Day Alive Arrive Guarantee.
