Internal overflow boxes are generally the safest and preferred way to move water from your display aquarium down to a sump. Because they rely on gravity, there is less risk for an overflow. Internal overflow boxes require the aquarium to be drilled, which might sound nerve racking, but if you use a diamond coated drill bit, it’s easier than you’d think! Just be sure that your aquarium glass is not tempered before you start.
