Is the stem side for connecting to nylon hose?

Hi Jeremy,
The stem side is for plugging into another push connect fitting (it removes the need to have a small piece of tubing between two push connect fittings). For a nylon hose you would want a barb fitting. Those hose slides over the barb and then is secured by a clamp.
