One thing that few mandarins can't resist is live brine shrimp (Artemia salina). They are easy for them to capture and ingest, yet they swim in a manner that strongly elicits the fish's natural feeding response. The jar of NanoBrine included in the package delivers a planktonic blast of live, freshly hatched (i.e. more nutritious) brine shrimp. Copepods naturally make up the bulk of a mandarin's diet. They tend to hunt these minute prey throughout most of the daylight hours to get a good fill. That's why this package includes a jar of 5280 Pods. The three copepod species in this quality live product (Tigriopus californicus, Tisbe biminiensis and Apocyclops panamensis) can seed a lasting and continuously accessible population of nutritious live feed. Finally, the Can O' Cyclops included in the package can be used as soon as the animal is on its feet again. Very small amounts may be added during feeding time, with increasing amounts offered as the animal consumes more and more of this proven product. These supplemental feedings serve to keep its belly full as it matures into a larger, more colorful and more fully developed fish.

Designed to hatch during the transit period, so they arrive at their most nutritional state of 24-48 hours post-hatch. Rich in fat and proteins the baby brine shrimp makes an excellent easy to consume food source that will entice even the most finicky of fish. The short and quick movements they make will instigate a feeding response that is almost impossible for any fish to refuse. The Nano Brine Shrimp makes a great starting food and will give your fish energy to hunt down some of the more elusive copepods.

Copepods are an essential part of a saltwater aquatic ecosystem for many reasons and it is common to get them as hitchhikers in your home aquarium, but can be very hard to sustain their populations. In most instances, it is the adult copepods that are transferred as a hitchhiker and will be consumed pretty quickly, where the juvenile pods are commonly found hiding in your rocks nooks and crannies and will not be consumed nearly as quickly, giving them a chance to reproduce. It is common to need to supplement a phytoplankton food source for the pods, and using Ocean Magik Live Phytoplankton will ensure they have the proper diet to survive and thrive.

ZooMed Can O' Cyclops

Similar to the appearance and size of live adult copepods, Can O' Cyclops are a preserved cyclopoid copepod that will encourage feeding responses in fish that actively eat copepods. After a few days of your fish getting used to consuming live copepods, start to add a small amount of Can O' Cyclops and it is just a matter of time until your fish will start to eat the prepared cyclopoids. An unopened container will be shelf-stable for up to 3 years, and once opened it is suggested to keep it refrigerated and will stay good for up to 1 full week. If you plan on not using the entire can within a week, we suggest taking an amount and freezing it, and then thaw it as needed.
