The Red Mangrove is a hardy true plant that adds a unique and attractive touch to aquariums and refugiums.

AlgaeBarn's Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) is aquacultured in a controlled environment allowing them to treat and quarantine it, reducing any risk of unwanted parasites or hitchhikers within the algae. Red Mangroves trees are a popular addition to refugiums as well as brackish and saltwater aquariums as an ornamental plant. A group of Red Mangroves, called a mangal, can create a beautiful, tropical appearance to the aquascape. Small fishes may also shelter amongst the roots of the mangroves. Red Mangroves are an extremely hardy and fairly undemanding species and will benefit the system as the roots develop, enriching the substrate and taking up nutrients.

How To Add Red Mangroves to your Aquarium

Adding Red Mangroves is pretty easy and we highly suggest quarantining or at a minimum rinsing the plant with freshwater before it is added to your tank. It will grow best in a dedicated refugium area that has a moderate flow with a strong light source such as the Kessil H-series LED fixtures. We suggest starting with an 8-hour per day photoperiod, and adjusting the amount of light it receives as needed to maintain color and growth.

Red Mangrove Maintenance

Red Mangroves require minimal maintenance, but will benfit from having their leaves frequently rinsed with freshwater to remove salt and mineral deposits that accumulate. Mangroves will benefit from a good substrate that is not too dense, and will form a strong root network where they can take up nutrients from the substrate. Provide plenty of space above the plants for them to branch out and grow, and strong lighting to support their energy needs.

PLEASE NOTE: AlgaeBarn goes to great lengths to treat, quarantine and remove any unwanted parasites, hitchhikers, and other organisms from their macroalgae. However, they do not guarantee that it is completely and totally free of anything unwanted. This is because sometimes spores, eggs, etc. can remain viable but not visible, despite the strict quarantine procedure. As a result, we always recommend that you properly quarantine anything new that you are adding to your tank.

Product Questions

How tall is the product, my nano tanks are about 10 inches ,,I don't want to put them underwater and drown them,,my pom pom macros are awesome,I want more life in my tank,,thks
Question by: Vincent on Mar 19, 2024, 7:32 AM
Hey there! These typically are between 6-8" tall. However they may be larger.
Answer by: Laura (BRS Staff) on Apr 2, 2024, 11:39 AM
How big will the red mangrove grow? How fast will it grow? In the wild it seems they grow fast and get huge. I’ve always thought a mangrove refugium would be cool but if they grow 5 feet a year it might get too big. Thanks, Peter
Question by: Peter Schultz on Jul 27, 2023, 7:30 PM
Hello, thank you for contacting Bulk Reef Supply customer service. They do not grow very fast. They grow rather slowly
Answer by: Alexander Reinartz (BRS Staff) on Aug 1, 2023, 10:39 AM
Does the black tube that is on the base of the plant remain intact when placing in the aquarium or do you remove it?
Question by: Dianna Chamblin on Dec 2, 2021, 5:33 AM
You would want to remove the black tube. That is there to protect the roots during transportation.
