Why does BRS recommend this?

For almost all people it is not if, but when the power will be lost to your tank. If you have Ecotech Vortech pumps you will get a lot of value out of the Ecotech Battery Backup module.  It is one of the easiest battery backup solutions on the market, and once you piece together another battery backup configuration there is a ton of value in the Ecotech line and their battery backup

In an aquarium with no flow, fish and corals begin to die in as little as 4 to 10 hours. The VorTech Battery Backup is reef tank insurance in an aluminum housing. By adding the VorTech Battery Backup, your tank is insulated from power interruptions for up to 36 hours with the MP40w and up to 72 hours with the MP10 and MP20. The Battery Back-up is now compatible with the Ecotech Vectra Return Pump too (booster cable required).

Product Questions

Trying to find battery back up for my cichlid tank that has sump in case power goes out which one of these two the vorTech or ice cap will run a simplicity DC return pump? Or do I need to get a back up they use for computers to run during power outage?
Question by: Kevin Knutson on May 2, 2023, 8:57 PM
Neither of the mentioned battery back ups are designed for the Simplicity pump, but the Ice Cap may be able to run it; the Vortech is for EcoTech Marine products only. A computer UPC will not be able to run a pump for long as they are only designed to provide enough time to turn off a computer.

Question by: Christine Wilson on Nov 24, 2022, 12:00 PM
Thanks for reaching out! the Battery back up has an alotted reserve to Backup power for 30 or more hours on a VorTech Pump. This will then turn the pumps off once it has been reached

Is the battery lead acid or lithium ion? Does the trickle charger utilize smart charging ( does it quit charging the battery when it doesn’t need it?)? One of the reviews said it overcharged the battery.
Question by: Tom Neveitt on Feb 24, 2022, 10:55 AM
Hey Tom, thanks for the question! These are a lead acid battery!

Hi,
How long before the battery expires or needs replacement?
Or
What is the life-span of the battery?
Question by: Fernando C. on Jun 12, 2016, 2:35 AM
Great question!
We are not certain about the full life of the battery through out the years however we have been running these for 3 years without issue. the back up battery will of course last 24-48 hours depending on the load.
Answer by: Connor on Jun 14, 2016, 6:18 PM
My currently have a float valve in my overflow, and my apex will shut down my return pump (Vectra M1).
Now, if I plug the Vectra into battery backup, how can I shut off the punp when my tank overflow?
Can I set the pump to run slower when on battery backup?
Question by: Viet Truong on Jun 8, 2016, 11:44 PM
Great question!
With the pump on battery back up the flow will be reduced to 30% of the intensity. You will need to unplug the battery back up when turning the pump off completely.
Answer by: Connor on Jun 9, 2016, 6:11 PM

I hooked up battery back up and the plug (part# 10427) going from MP-10 controller to battery back up, does not plug in flush on either end . Is this normal? Fortunately, this does not affect operation. About 3/16 plug is exposed.
Question by: JOSEPH XERRI on May 19, 2016, 3:54 PM
Great question!
This is normal with the battery back up cable and is on our systems exactly the same.

Hi! I have two MP1O'S (one for each of my tanks that are next to each other). For how long can both of my pumps run on a single battery pack? Thanks! I'm assuming that it comes with 2 cables right?
Question by: Jose Saballos on May 13, 2016, 4:29 PM
Great question!
You can expect up to 36 hours with 2 vortech mp10's on a single battery back up. The battery back up with come with ports to work with 2 vortech's simultaneously.

Can this be used with the with Neptune Systems WAV? Would you need an adapter to do so? Can you plug the WAV module into the Votech Backup for power to the pump? I have the Apex on a battery backup so the brain could still tell it what to do.
Question by: Rob Oderman on May 8, 2016, 8:14 AM
Great question!
We are not aware of the Ecotech battery back up being able to adapt to the WAV pump. As this connects with a apex cable that is not easy to adapt it would not be an easy process to connect to the 1link. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor on May 10, 2016, 5:40 PM

Can this back up be used for my ecotech radion xr30 pro..... and if so how many do i require thanks
Question by: mo on Aug 24, 2015, 12:53 PM
Great question!
The Battery Back up will work with both Radions and Vortech pumps. The Battery will come with 2 outlets to plug into either the Radion Ballast or the Vortech pump. If you have 2 Radions and only want battery back up for them you will need just 1 battery. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor on Aug 24, 2015, 3:56 PM
Hello, I bought the battery backup and wanted to know if I should connect my two MP 40 or just one?
I have a 150G display 1.50 meter long.
Question by: Oscar on Jun 15, 2014, 4:53 AM
Hey Oscar,
The main threat when the power goes out is oxygen exchange and one pump should suffice for that. If it were my tank, I would err on the side of longer battery life by only using one pump on the battery.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Jun 15, 2014, 4:53 AM
Can this battery be used with other pumps besides vortech?
Question by: Joe on Apr 14, 2014, 3:13 AM

Hi Joe,
It is only designed to be used with the EcoTech Pumps. Most pumps don't run on DC power like the EcoTech Vortechs do.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Apr 14, 2014, 3:13 AM
Can I use this battery backup with my Korlia Evo pumps?
Question by: Anneke on Apr 5, 2014, 3:05 AM
-3
Hi Anneke,
Unfortunately not. The vortech battery backups have connectors specifically sized for a port on the vortech pumps. They also run on DC current (the same type of energy stored in a battery) whereas the Koralias run on AC current like that from your walls. For the Koralias there wouldn't be very many options in the event of a power outage other then a generator.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Apr 5, 2014, 3:05 AM
If i have my MP10 hooked up to my apex can i still intergrate this battery back up on the system? Also, is their any other battery backups?
Question by: Joe on Mar 27, 2014, 9:00 AM
-1
Hey Joe, that's not a problem at all. The pumps still plug into there normal power source. The only thing is that if you have the outlets configured to turn off in feed mode, instead of turning off they would go into power outage mode and the battery will kick in. You would need to use a wxm module to tell the pumps to turn off rather then cutting the power. Good news is that if you use the wxm module it will also free up outlets on the power bar.
