In this video we take a close look at the ClariSea Gen2 Automatic Fleece Filter by D-D. Let’s begin by reviewing the reasons why mechanical filtration is so important and look at how the Clarisea Fleece Roller solves major inconvenience for all aquarium keepers.
Adequate filtration is, possibly, the most important aspect of a successful aquarium and maintaining it is the most time-demanding task for certain. Uneaten food and waste byproducts from tank inhabitants build up in the aquarium and break down into nitrates and phosphates. If nitrates or phosphates are left unchecked, nuisance algae will quickly takeover the tank or worse yet, become toxic to your fish and corals. Additionally, these pollutants will discolor the water making it more difficult for light to pass through the water column, potentially impacting photosynthetic organisms inside and taking away from the natural beauty of your tank.
Mechanical filtration, like filter socks, is the type of filtration in which small particles and compounds are removed from the water column before they have a chance to break down. Research shows that in order for filter socks or filter pads to be effective, they must be changed at least every 2-3 days. Or, even sooner because they quickly become clogged with waste. Many aquarists find this task daunting and will quickly seek out alternative methods of removing waste from the aquarium or opt not to use any form of mechanical filtration at all.
In recent years, Rolling mat filters have become a very popular alternative to filter socks and pads. Rolling mat filters remove detritus from the water column via a long filter roll. Water passes through a segment of the filter roll which filters out debris. Once the segment is clogged, the filter material is then advanced, to expose a clean segment of the filter roll for water to pass through and be filtered. The filter material is advanced either manually or automatically until the entire filter roll is spent and needs to be replaced.
For many, this method is considerably more desirable than filter socks because it requires far less effort than their counterparts and is also much more efficient at removing particles from the water. Of course, the major drawback is that an automatic roller mat is more expensive than a filter sock.
The ClariSea Gen2 Automatic Fleece Filter by D-D is one of the newest rolling mat filters on the market and we could not be more excited to share it with all of you!
