Today on BRStv, we have another episode of BRS 52 FAQ where we answer all of your frequently asked reefing questions from our popular 52 Weeks of Reefing series. This week we are answering one of the most frequently asked questions from Week 9: “How much flow do I need for my tank?" There are a few variables to this as it's not an exact science, but in general we recommend 20 to 40 times your display tank's volume. This will give you a target goal to aim towards as you decide on powerheads for your tank. The higher target goal will be a good starting point for SPS dominant tanks, and the lower better for soft corals and LPS. In most cases you will want to split that target goal between two or more powerheads to create natural flow patterns in the tank. For example in a one hundred and twenty gallon tank, your target goal would be around twenty four hundred to forty eight hundred gallons per hour depending on what type of corals dominate your tank, split between your desired amount of pumps. While certain variables like aquascape layout, coral care requirements, and personal preference might require some further evaluation or planning, we have found this formula to be a good starting point for the vast majority of reefers to help nail down a good flow rate for your tank.
