Regular maintenance of your aquarium pumps and powerheads is essential for keeping your tank running smoothly. In this video, Will and Brian guide you through three easy steps to clean your pumps, ensuring optimal performance and longevity. Whether you’re a seasoned reefer or new to the hobby, these tips will make pump maintenance straightforward and effective.

Step 1: Unplug and Remove the Pump

Start by unplugging your pump—this is critical to avoid running the pump dry. Carefully remove it from your aquarium to minimize debris spreading into the tank. Place the pump into a separate container for cleaning. Handling it gently helps prevent disturbing built-up waste and algae that could cloud your tank water.

Step 2: Soak in Citric Acid Solution

Prepare a cleaning solution by mixing 1 cup of citric acid per gallon of water. Submerge your pump in this solution and turn it on to let the citric acid work its magic. This powerful yet gentle cleaner:

  • Breaks down proteins and algae
  • Protects rubber O-rings and seals better than vinegar
  • Cleans deep into cracks and crevices

Citric acid is preferred over vinegar due to its effectiveness and ability to preserve your pump’s components over time. Let the pump soak for 20–30 minutes to loosen tough buildup.

Step 3: Scrub, Rinse, and Repeat (If Necessary)

Disassemble the pump, including removing the impeller and drive shaft. Use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub away residue from all surfaces, especially hard-to-reach areas. Avoid over-scrubbing stubborn spots—instead, soak the pump again for another 15–20 minutes before scrubbing a second time. Once clean, rinse thoroughly with RO water to remove any residue before reassembling.

Final Tips for Reinstallation

  • Clean your overflow system to handle the increased flow from a freshly cleaned pump.
  • Monitor your tank for an hour after reinstalling the pump to ensure everything operates smoothly.
  • Regular maintenance every few months can prevent tough buildup and ensure your pumps perform at their best.

Keep Your Pumps Performing Like New

A clean pump not only extends its lifespan but also ensures optimal water circulation, keeping your reef healthy and thriving. Follow these simple steps regularly to save money, reduce stress, and maintain your aquarium's health.
