Bulkheads allow plumbing to flow through your aquarium or sump.
Heavy duty Schedule 80 PVC bulkheads feature some distinct advantages over ABS bulkheads:
- O-Rings are 2X as thick as ABS O-Rings
- Schedule 80 construction will far outlast ABS
- Reliable seams
- Flange and nut side are very easy to grip
When measuring for bulkheads, you will need a hole in your tank that is slightly larger (1-3mm) than the "C" measurement for the corresponding bulkhead but no larger than the "A" measurement. (see image)
Example: If you have a 1.75" diameter hole currently in your tank, then you would want to use the 3/4" Sch 80 Bulkhead.

Product Questions
Thanks for getting in touch with us in regards to the threads on the inside of this bulkhead. This would fit standard pvc fitting and would accept the common ones found in local hardware stores. Please let me know if there is anything else that we can assist with. Thanks!
Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 pvc will have the same outer diameter for the same nominal size rating. If you have a coupler or other fitting, there should be no issue if you want/need to switch. Just bear in mind that schedule 80 will have a slightly smaller internal diameter of the pipe compared to schedule 40.
Have a great day!
These will work on 1" tanks no problem. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
I want to go with schedule 80 but cannot alter the holes.
The Schedule 80 bulkhead will require a different hole size and will not be a direct replacement for your current ABS bulkhead. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
The size of the bulkhead is mostly dictated by the amount of flow you plan to run through it. Given how tiny the tank is though I would imagine your not going to be running 500 gallons per hour through it. Assuming your not running more then 150gph a 1/2" bulkhead should be plenty fine.
I have some sc 80 pvc the hole is 1" but the out side is 1 1/4" im looking for a bulk head that would fit this pipe and did't see it on the site do you have one that would fit this size in sc 80 pvc?
Thanks mat
It may sound strange but you never want to use a tape measure with the diameter of plumbing parts as it will only lead you to problems. Do you know what size the pipe was sold/labeled as? Pipe is measure in nominal sizes, so a pipe labeled as 1" will be compatible and fit with all other 1" pipes and fitting (sch40, sch80, etc) but if you actually measure the pipe or fittings you won't find an actual dimension that actually measures 1", it will vary depending on the type of pipe, fittings, etc. It is likely that if you measured it at a little over 1.25" it is most likely 1" nominal pipe size (the OD would measure 1.315").
Most folks with a 125 would use 1" bulkheads for the drain(s). For the return flow back to the tank I would just use whatever size matches your return pump (ie if your return pump uses 3/4" pipe, just use a 3/4" bulkhead) that will save you from having to adapt it or anything like that.
That would be my suggestion as well. Tanks that are already drilled for bulkheads are almost always drilled with ABS bulkheads in mind.
Thanks
In this bulkhead (the thread x thread version) both sides of the bulkheads have female threads.
The big thing you want to focus on if your tank is already drilled is the size of the holes. A 1.5" bulkhead refers to the size of the pipe that will be used but you can compare the installation hole size to the holes you have.
A 1.5" ABS bulkhead requires an installation hold size of 2.32" which is most likely what your larger hole is but worth double checking.
The 1" ABS bulkhead requires an installation hole size of 1.65" so if you have a 1.75" hole you are all set there!
Here is one type of the ABS bulkheads.
