These replacement pads will replace the removable foam pads found in one BRS Carbon and GFO cartridge. Kit includes two foam disks as well as an additional disk attached to the threaded cap that goes on the bottom of your cartridge.

What is the difference between these (old style) and the hard shell sponges?

The old style pads come with a base that has a sponge attached to the soft-sided cartridge. The newer hardshell cartridges do not require the additional foam pad because of the built-in strainers.
