Phosphate

Phosphate levels often come up when talking about algae growth in our aquariums. While it's not the sole reason algae occurs, highly elevated phosphate levels can indeed contribute to undesirable algae growth. At the same time, zero phosphate also has negative impacts on our reef aquariums, so we recommend aiming for phosphate levels between 0.01 and 0.1 ppm. Because we’re measuring in a range so close to zero, using a high-quality phosphate test kit is important.
