Magnesium
Magnesium is the third most important major element in a reef aquarium—behind only calcium and alkalinity. While magnesium doesn’t change as rapidly as some other water parameters, it’s still a good idea to test for it occasionally to get the most out of your coral. In a saltwater aquarium, we recommend aiming for a magnesium level between 1200 - 1400 ppm.
